Hermann Zapf’s 1950 Sistina was originally known as Aurelia Titling. It is a substantial addition to the Michelangelo Titling that was based on research of Roman inscriptions. 1951 saw the first hot metal release at the D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt.
Initially, Sistina was an all-caps font. Small capitals are used in the Linotype digital version. In the Palatino nova type family, a Platinum Collection product from Linotype, Hermann Zapf, and Akira Kobayashi created a new improved version of Sistina that is now known as Palatino Imperial.
