Cantarell Font was created in 2009 by “Dave Crossland”. While he was studying typefaces in University of Reading. It is a Sans-Serif category typeface and it belongs to Humanist classification. It was published by abattis foundry under SIL open font license and it is free to use.

Its latest release was on 22 December 2020. Its main purpose was to make web pages readable especially on cheap android phones because the visibility of words is very less on small screens. Although this font received criticism from free software community but many were in its support as well, that is why it is still available in Google Fonts.

Regular font fully supports this font’s writing system. Its aim is mainly small screens so it is not very suitable for printing. unless, you are very creative while designing with this font. As a Graduation project for masters in typefaces Designs programme, it is a very good font.

Use of Cantarell Font

Cantarell Font is used as default UI of GNOME since the release of its version 3.0 and it replaced DejaVu and Bitstream Vera. This font is also used in Fedora Project which is an open-source platform for clouds and containers used by developers of software.

Its main purpose was to make web pages readable on cheap android phones as their screen readability is very low. HTC was the first company to ship a Google Android phone and it came with a feature known as font-face which included this font in it.

Small phone screens were the aim for developing this font. So designers usually don’t use it in large size printing as it is not clearly visible in large size. However, many creative designers use it in their designs in such a way that it looks more artistic and beautiful.
