The creation of Canela Font started as an analysis of Caslon font, but after some time it was taken in a whole new direction, leaving its heritage of serifs and creating a new typeface in which quality was influenced by the author’s experience in stone craving.
This typeface was created by Miguel Reyes and originated from Mexico. He studied graphic design at Benemérita Universidad Autónoma after that he studied type design in the Type media Course.
He designed this typeface which defies all the old traditional classifications means that it’s neither purely a sans-serif nor serif. It’s between both families and it has a classification of both soft and sharp edges with modern and old roots in the classical.
This modern yet traditional typeface comes with 12 display styles. Furthermore, it also included four families in three optical designs which are Canela, Canela deck, and Canela condensed and all of this got inspired by the American book covers of the 1960s and 1970s. As time passes it got enhancement and additions and in 2022 February Ilya Ruderman designed its Cyrillic.
Uses of Canela Font
Canela Font was first used in issue 5 of fashion and art magazine Document Journal in 2014 where it gained popularity after that it started to appear in different places such as music album covers, on an Italian scooter museum website, and in 2019 future affairs conference.
